Same GCSE grade, different A Level starting point

GCSE results land on Thursday, and for anyone going on to A Levels, the grade matters less than what sits underneath it. A grade 6 in Chemistry earned through strong recall and shaky application is a different starting position from a grade 6 earned the other way round, even though the certificate looks identical.

A-Level Chemistry rewards the second student and quietly punishes the first, because the content stops being something you can hold in memory and starts being something you have to use. If your child is moving into Year 12 sciences, this week is worth asking a different question than "what did you get?". Ask instead which topics felt hardest and whether that ever actually got resolved.

The concept of moles is a good test. If it felt uncomfortable at GCSE, it doesn't improve on its own. It shows up again in the first term of Year 12, as the foundation for much of what follows.
